It is a stage that blends care and nurturing with academics: as children move through their first stages of exploration and discovery, they also build academic skills through their early reading, writing, and mathematical thinking processes.
From this level on, children take English, ICT, and Robotics classes, subjects that are part of our institutional educational project. In short, we fulfill the objectives of preschool education in Colombia as set out in the General Education Law:
middle school
It covers grades 6 through 9. In this stage, our students become more independent and build their knowledge through research, practice, and experience.
Knowledge in Technology must be firmly grounded so that, in Upper Secondary, students can begin producing digital content. We fulfill the objectives of the General Education Law:
academic high school
At our school, High School (Upper Secondary) covers grades 10 and 11.
In this stage, we seek to develop not only autonomy and initiative in our students, but also leadership, creativity, and innovation, so that their knowledge can contribute to humanity's academic and technological growth. We fulfill the objectives of the General Education Law:
Since 2015, Colegio Liceo Moderno has been committed to teaching a foreign language, in this case English. That year, English instruction was increased from the 4 hours required by the General Education Law to 6 hours, and it has continued to grow ever since, reaching the 8 hours we offer today.
In 2020, we decided to teach English by levels in secondary school, and in 2023 we extended this approach starting in 3rd grade of elementary school. The goal of these levels is to help students strengthen their communication skills and advance in their proficiency. Notably, at the end of their educational cycles, students certify their level through an international exam.
In 2022, the school began the process of becoming a Bilingual School, which requires 50% of the curriculum to be taught in a second language. For this reason, from Preschool through 2nd grade of Elementary School, children take their Natural Science, Math, and Art classes in English.
These subjects will be introduced gradually and progressively, extending year by year to the other grades that make up the educational cycles in Colombia, and other subjects will be added, such as Emotional Management, Technology, and American–British Culture.
It should be noted that these subjects, as well as the new ones to be added, are taught in accordance with the national guidelines and basic competency standards. We expect our first class of bilingual high school graduates to graduate in 2032.
One of our school's goals in the complementary training offered through our emphasis is to teach programming. From the early grades, students learn programming languages that help them develop skills in designing web and mobile applications. Our students are able to program for iOS, iPhone, and Android, and their projects come to life as they put these programming skills into practice.
Since 2015, our school has been committed to teaching a foreign language, in this case English. That year, English instruction was increased from the 4 hours required by the General Education Law to 6 hours, and it has continued to grow ever since, reaching the 8 hours we offer today.
In 2020, we decided to teach English by levels in secondary school. The goal of these levels is to help students strengthen their skills and advance in their proficiency.
In the English levels, students from grades 6 through 10 take class with peers from these grades who are at the same stage, ensuring that everyone progresses at the same pace.
For initial placement, students take a proficiency or placement test that determines their level in the 4 skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.
At the end of the school year, students take the test again, and if they exceed the expectations for their level, they move on until they reach B2, the level the school expects of every graduate.
Each level lasts one school year.
Since 2023, English by levels begins in 3rd grade
Currently, students are certified through the international TOEFL exam.
The school's emphasis is Web and Mobile Application Development and Digital Strategy. To earn their academic high school diploma with this emphasis, students receive training beyond what government authorities require, starting in 9th grade and strengthened in grades 10 and 11.
One of the subjects in this complementary training is Entrepreneurship, an academic space where students learn that their technology-based senior projects can become great business ideas or profitable ventures for their lives as future programmers.
In response to the challenges and needs of the 21st century, Colegio Liceo Moderno decided in 2019 to include Robotics in its curriculum.
This subject is taught two hours a week by a teacher who is an expert in the field, enabling great progress toward the goals that 21st-century education sets for schools. We have always been known as an innovative, forward-thinking school in step with technology.
We use a constructivist, project-based methodology that allows our children to build their own knowledge by designing and building prototypes, which also makes learning meaningful. This subject supports students' holistic, hands-on development and connects concepts across all subjects. Robotics is a magical science that can be used to teach everything from math to social studies.
By building functional prototypes, children from Kindergarten through 11th grade develop technological skills, not only in using technology and electronic devices, but also in design, production, construction, and solving today's problems. Our challenge is to educate well-rounded, multidisciplinary individuals who can propose and devise solutions to real-world challenges, bringing together knowledge, skills, and values.
Since the pandemic began, people have experienced a wide range of emotions that affect their moods. Through weekly workshops, the school aims to help students learn to manage their emotions in different life situations, where emotional intelligence and emotional responsibility play an important role.
